John Wick- Film Review
John Wick is an action
film which was released in 2014, and it was directed by Chad Stahelski and
David Leitch and the film stars Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen and
William Dafoe. John Wick is about an ex-hitman named John Wick how is forced of
retirement after certain circumstances have happened. There are events in the
film which lead to Wick coming out of retirement and he then takes revenge out
on the Russian Mafia because there are some members of the Russian Mafia which
have done some really bad things to John Wick and he wants revenge for what has
happened. This will be a spoiler free review because this is a film which went
under many people’s radar and this means that many people haven’t seen this and
therefore there will be no spoilers.
Let’s begin with the
positives first, the action sequences within this film are by far one of the
best things about this film is that the action sequences in this film are
fantastic. The action doesn’t have a single flaw about it, there is an action
sequence which takes place within a nightclub and this is some of best action
that has been put on film for a while. The action here is clear and it
understandable, the directors have made sure that the action is always clear
and it has been edited to make sure that the viewer understands what is
happening with in the sequence. This action sequence has some of best gun play
that has been put in action film, there are little details in each action
scenes which have been placed throughout the scenes and this shows that the
directors understand how to put these action scenes together. The action is
much better in this film that in any other action film that has been released
since, the hand-to-hand sequence is probably the weakest action scene but it is
no means that the action is bad, the filmmakers have made sure that action is
clear but also interesting and this is something which everyone can appreciate
with this film. The other aspect to like about all the action scenes is that
the filmmakers have made them believe-able and you see Wick who is talented but
there are moments that he could die because there are details in each scene
which are planted throughout such as the character getting shot in some
sequences but also he is easily wounded and this is something which sets it
apart from other action films because when a character gets injured there is a
couple of scenes and then the character is fine but that is not case in John
Wick.
Besides the action
sequences in this film there is some good acting in this film, Keanu Reeves is
very good in this film. There are scenes in this film which require some good
acting and the performance from Reeves is excellent because he shows and
conveys the emotions that the character needs to show. This might be the
performance that Keanu Reeves have given in this film is solid and while
watching this film a viewer would believe that the characters are real and this
is something which every film should achieve during the film, the acting is
some of the best that has been done by Keanu Reeves. The acting from the other
actors is also very good, Michael Nyqvist is also a great antagonist in this
film, he has played the antagonist in the fourth mission impossible film. The
acting in this film from him is outstanding and he is better in this film that
in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, his acting is much better and he is more
enjoyable to watch in this film. The other cast members are also great and
there is not a single flaw with any of the acting in this film, and like the
action is very strong.
There are more aspects of
this film and something which the filmmakers have done is that they have
established this world that hitmen live in, the world is shown to the viewers
because the world has its own hotel and nightclub and currency that they all
use. This might have been done because the filmmakers wanted to establish world
and then expand on the world during the upcoming sequel. The audience gets to
see enough of the world that the hitmen live and understand how the world works
enough. This is something which could have had a little more screen time but
the amount that is shown is good, it is clear and established. There are some
more good things about this film such as the cinematography, the film uses
various colour pallets and this is something which makes the environments that
the characters are in are more interesting to look at and this makes the action
look aesthetically pleasing to look out.
There is only one
negative with this film and this would be the ending of the film, the ending of
the film is slightly weird and this is because you could think that the film
could end at one point but the film does go on and there is another action
sequence that takes place. But outside of this is a film which is great and
this is a small flaw that this film has and that is it, there is nothing else
wrong with this film, and maybe some of the framing in the action scenes can
sometimes reveal that the action is not convincing but outside of these
elements this is an action film which people can enjoy. John Wick is a very
entertaining action film which has some great action scenes and some great
acting from the talented people involved in this film and the world building is
something which they should capitalise on during the sequel. This is a
recommended watch because this is an action film which has none of the editing
and shaky cam which has been seen in other action films.
Conclusion
This is a fantastic
action film with all of the great action sequences that everyone should watch,
the action is well directed and this is an enjoyable film where the action is
clear and understandable without wondering what is happening. This might be one
of the best action films that has been released in this decade so far. This is
recommended watch to anyone who loves watching entertaining action films.
Rating: 8/10.
